Sleep Apnea

Do you struggle with chronic snoring or a suspected sleeping disorder?

You could have a condition known as obstructive sleep apnoea, or OSA. OSA occurs when soft tissues at the back of the throat collapse against one another, blocking air flow and oxygen when you sleep.

How Can Sleep Dentistry Help?

If you suffer from sleep apnoea, an oral appliance may be an effective and non-intrusive solution to your sleep woes. Specific sleep aids such as Somnomed appliance therapy help to naturally open your airway, eliminating snoring and increasing oxygen intake.

Our Dentists have undergone extensive training in Somnomed therapies, allowing us to screen patients for sleep apnoea and fit them with an oral appliance if they qualify. In some situations, Somnomed may eliminate the need for wearing a bulky CPAP appliance.

Advantages of a Somnomed device:

  • Easier to travel with
  • More discreet
  • Quiet
  • Non-invasive
  • Can be used with or without a CPAP

How Somnomed Works

A Somnomed oral appliance is fitted to your unique oral anatomy, based on impressions taken of your mouth. From there, the upper and lower trays are positioned in a way that guides your lower jaw forward, preventing soft tissues at the back of your mouth from sealing against one another.

Adjustments may be needed in the first few weeks but it’s not uncommon to see an improvement in your sleep quality from the first night’s use.

Warning Signs of Sleep Apnoea

Some people never realise they’re suffering from a sleeping disorder until it’s too late. Since OSA places a strain on your overall body and immune system, diagnosis and treatment could save your life. Symptoms of sleep apnoea can include things like:

  • Weight gain
  • Fatigue
  • Depression
  • Flat, worn teeth
  • Cardiovascular problems
  • Large neck circumference

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, you may benefit from a sleep apnoea screening. Following your evaluation at Blacktown Dental Group, we may refer you for a clinical or home-based sleep study for an expert to evaluate your sleeping patterns.
