Root Canal

Illustration of inside of toothEndodontic therapy — or more commonly referred to as ‘root canal treatment’ — is one of the last lines of defence when it comes to saving a damaged or infected tooth.

The word endodontic originates from two root words: ‘endo-‘ meaning ‘inside’ and ‘dont-‘ referring to ‘tooth’. As such, it’s a type of therapy that focuses on treating the inside of a tooth. Most dental treatments involve restoring the outside surfaces with fillings or crowns, but a root canal involves the pulp chamber where nerves and blood vessels are housed.

Why Do I Need a Root Canal?

If you have a tooth with a crack or cavity that extends into the nerve chamber, those pulp tissues can become infected. As a result, the tooth may abscess or experience severe pain. Past trauma — even if it occurred decades earlier — may also cause a tooth nerve to die. When these situations occur, getting a root canal allows you to preserve the remaining tooth structure for several more years.

What to Expect During Treatment

Having a root canal doesn’t feel much different than getting other routine dental treatment completed. Thanks to comfortable nitrous oxide sedation and local anaesthetic, we can complete your endodontic treatment while you relax.

Depending on which tooth is being treated, some root canals will take longer than others. Teeth further back in the mouth have more roots and therefore more canals to clean, medicate and seal off.

Following your endodontic procedure, we recommend fitting your tooth with a porcelain crown. Being that root canal-treated teeth are no longer vital, the remaining enamel can be quite brittle. A crown will help to protect it.
